Listing Mistakes on Facebook Marketplace for Your Retail Store
Refurbsy Team
We analyzed Facebook Marketplace listings across thousands of retail stores on Refurbsy. The same mistakes appear everywhere — and the platform has tightened enough in the last year that a few of them will now cost you the account, not just the sale.
1. Dark, cluttered photos — and only two of them
Buyers scroll past listings where the item blends into a warehouse background. Shoot against a clear wall, lights on, and show every angle that matters.
Two photos used to be enough. It is not the same now: post multiple photos of every unit. The old workarounds are also finished — cropping a picture or rotating it a few degrees to pass it off as new no longer works. Facebook’s image system detects duplicates, and it reads EXIF metadata as well as pixels. They are not stupid about this.
The practical rule: shoot fresh photos per unit, and make sure images are cleaned before they go up. Photos taken through Refurbsy are automatically brightened, cropped and stripped of the metadata that gets a re-post flagged as a duplicate.
2. The wrong aspect ratio
A lot of advice says 1:16. We get better results ignoring it — the ad shows up most often in the same format as the rest of the feed, and matching that format is what keeps it from looking like an ad.
3. Model number buried (or missing)
Serious buyers search by model number. If it’s not in your title or first line, you’re invisible to your highest-intent traffic.
4. No dimensions
“Will it fit?” is the #1 pre-sale question. Listing width, height and depth up front removes the biggest hesitation — and cuts your message volume in half.
5. Vague condition notes
“Works great” convinces no one. Specific beats general: “New part installed June 2026, small scuff on left panel (pictured).” Honesty converts.
6. Ignoring the posting limit
This is the one that ends accounts. The limit is roughly 20 ads per month, and it does not reset the way people assume — deleting a listing and re-posting it still counts against the same allowance.
So bulk posting is a trap. Forty to sixty ads in a day gets the account treated as spam. Pace your listings across the month and treat each slot as something you spend deliberately on your best-margin stock.
7. Missing the shadowban signal
If your listings are getting zero views, that is not a bad week. That is the account being shadowbanned, and no amount of re-posting fixes it — re-posting is what deepens it. Stop, let the account rest, and fix the underlying cause (duplicate images, over-posting) before you list again.
8. Not sharing to Messenger
Share new listings to Messenger with your own contacts. It sounds small, but shares and saves are the engagement the algorithm reads, and listings with a lot of saves apparently get pushed harder in the feed. It costs nothing and it is the cheapest distribution on the platform.
9. One marketplace only
The buyer for that lightly-marked-but-perfect item might be on the platform you skipped. Cross-post everything; let software keep quantities in sync so you never double-sell.
Fix these and most stores see conversion lift within a week — no ad spend required.
